What we fix

Furnaces

Igniters, flame sensors, inducer motors, pressure switches, blowers, control boards and limit switches on gas and oil furnaces. We check the heat exchanger and venting on every call.

Boilers

Hot water boilers and their circulators, zone valves, expansion tanks, relief valves and low-water cutoffs. Pressure problems and cold baseboards are our daily work.

Heat pumps

Defrost problems, reversing valves, outdoor fan motors and refrigerant leaks. Cold-climate heat pump sizing and installs for homes going all-electric.

Thermostats

Wiring, replacements and smart thermostat setup, including heat pump and dual-fuel systems that need the right settings.

Before you call

  • Is the thermostat set to Heat and above room temperature?
  • Is the furnace switch (looks like a light switch) on?
  • Is the filter clean?
  • For oil heat: is there oil in the tank?
  • For a boiler: what does the pressure gauge read?

Heating questions

Why is my furnace running but the house will not warm up?

Start with the filter. A packed filter starves the furnace of air, the heat exchanger overheats, and the limit switch shuts the burners off while the blower keeps running. If the filter is clean, the usual causes are a dirty flame sensor, a failing igniter, a blocked flue or condensate line on a high-efficiency unit, or ductwork that has come apart in the basement or attic.

Why is my furnace making a loud bang when it starts?

A bang at startup is usually delayed ignition: gas builds up for a second before it lights. Dirty burners and a weak igniter are the common causes. It is not something to ignore, because it stresses the heat exchanger. Shut the system off and call.

Why does my boiler keep losing pressure?

A residential hot water boiler normally sits around 12 to 15 psi cold. If you keep having to add water, there is a leak somewhere: the relief valve, an expansion tank that has lost its air charge, a fitting, or a baseboard loop. Constantly adding fresh water brings in oxygen that corrodes the system from the inside, so get it found.

Is a heat pump enough for a Queensbury winter?

A cold-climate heat pump can carry most North Country homes through winter, but sizing and the backup plan matter. Look for models that meet the Energy Star cold-climate criteria, and keep a backup heat source for the coldest nights. We will look at your house and tell you plainly whether it fits.

Should I repair or replace my furnace?

Repair when the fix is a part and the heat exchanger and blower are healthy. Start talking about replacement when the repair costs a big share of a new system, the furnace is near the end of its expected life, or the heat exchanger is cracked. We give you the numbers on both and you decide.

What should I do if I smell gas?

Leave the house first. Do not flip switches or use the phone inside. From outside, call your gas utility or 911. National Grid customers can call National Grid’s gas emergency line. Call us after the utility has made it safe. New York also requires working CO alarms under Amanda’s Law.
